A Picasso Mystery Unveiled: Unraveling the Disappearance of a Priceless Masterpiece
A tiny Picasso painting, worth a fortune, has vanished without a trace, leaving Spanish authorities in a race against time.
The story begins with a precious artwork, "Naturaleza muerta con guitarra" (Still Life with Guitar), a delicate gouache and pencil creation by the legendary Pablo Picasso. This miniature masterpiece, measuring just 12.7cm x 9.8cm, was en route to a new exhibition in Granada when it mysteriously disappeared.
But here's where it gets controversial: the painting, valued at €600,000 (£520,000), was part of a consignment of loaned exhibits transported by van from Madrid. When the van arrived at the CajaGranada foundation, its contents were unloaded and checked, but due to some packaging issues, an exhaustive check was not possible. Despite this, the delivery was signed off, and the van departed.
And this is the part most people miss: the painting was under video surveillance over the weekend, but when it came time to unpack the pieces on Monday, it was discovered missing. The foundation's staff and curator noticed the absence of the Picasso gouache, and immediately reported it to the Policía Nacional.
Spanish media has suggested a potential lead, indicating the van may have stopped near Granada, with its two occupants taking turns guarding the precious cargo. But this is just speculation, and the investigation is ongoing.
Picasso's global fame and the astronomical value of his works have long made his art a coveted target for thieves. This latest incident is just one in a long line of heists targeting Picasso's masterpieces. From Paris to London, and now Granada, his art continues to attract the attention of criminals.
In 2007, two Picasso paintings worth €50m were stolen from the artist's granddaughter's home in Paris. Just two years later, a Picasso sketchbook valued at over €8m was taken from a Paris museum. In 1989, twelve Picasso paintings were stolen from the French Riviera villa of another grandchild, Marina Picasso. And these are just a few notable examples.
The question remains: will this latest disappearance be solved, and will the Picasso painting be recovered? The investigation is ongoing, and the foundation has expressed their faith in the authorities. But with Picasso's art commanding such high prices, and the potential for a lucrative payoff, the case is sure to spark differing opinions and theories.
